Try this right now: open Google on your phone and type "beauty salon near me". What shows up first isn't a website: it's a map with three results. Those three results get more than 70% of the clicks for that search (BrightLocal, Local Consumer Review Survey 2024).

If your salon isn't one of them, you're losing clients every day without knowing it. And the worst part is that the tool to get there is completely free: it's called Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business).

This guide covers everything you need to know to set up, optimize and maintain your Google profile so it ranks first in local results in Colombia, turns those views into bookings and builds an online reputation your competitors can't ignore.

What is Google Business Profile and why does it matter for a salon?

Google Business Profile is Google's free system that lets brick-and-mortar businesses appear on Google Maps and in local search results. When a potential client searches for a service "near me" or in a specific location, Google shows the businesses that have an active, well-optimized profile.

For a beauty salon, barbershop or spa in Colombia, this is especially powerful because:

  • Local search means buying intent: someone searching "beauty salon in Chapinero" or "barbershop open now Laureles" isn't researching; they're ready to book.
  • It beats social media on intent: Instagram or TikTok are for discovery; Google is for when the client already knows what they want.
  • It's free: you don't pay to appear. You only pay for paid results (Google Ads) if you want to. The organic profile costs nothing.
  • It shows critical information in real time: hours, phone number, photos, reviews and a "Book" or "Call" button right in the results.

Step 1: Claim or create your Google Business Profile

If your business already appears on Google Maps

Someone may have already created a profile for your business (a client, Google itself or a previous owner). To check:

  1. Search for your business name on Google Maps.
  2. If a result with your business information appears, click "Own this business?".
  3. Google will ask you to verify that you own the business.

If your business doesn't appear

  1. Go to business.google.com from your computer or phone.
  2. Sign in with a Google account (create one specifically for the business if you don't have one).
  3. Click "Manage now" or "Add your business".
  4. Fill in the form with your business name, primary category, address, phone number and website.

Business verification

Google needs to confirm that you really operate at that address. The most common methods in Colombia are:

  • Code by mail: Google sends a postcard with a code to your address within 5–14 business days. This is the most common method.
  • Phone or video verification: available for some businesses. Google calls you or asks for a short video showing the premises.
💡

Use the exact address as it's registered for your premises. If there are discrepancies between the address you enter and the one Google knows, verification can fail or take longer.

Step 2: Complete 100% of your profile

An incomplete profile is almost as bad as no profile. Google prioritizes complete profiles in its results. Make sure you fill in every section:

Basic information

  • Business name: use your salon's real name, without artificially adding keywords (e.g. not "Salón Valentina - Best Salon in Bogotá"). Google can penalize this.
  • Primary category: choose the most specific one possible. For a beauty salon use "Beauty salon". For barbershops, "Barber shop". For spas, "Spa".
  • Secondary categories: you can add up to 9. Examples: "Nail salon", "Eyebrow bar", "Tanning salon".
  • Phone: your business's main contact number (ideally your WhatsApp Business number).
  • Website: your website if you have one, or the direct link to your booking page.

Opening hours

Your hours should reflect exactly when you're open. If you have different weekend hours, set them up. If you have public holidays or special closures, turn on "Special hours" in advance.

A business that shows as "Open now" on Google gets significantly more visits than one without hours or with wrong hours. When a client turns up and you're closed because your Google hours were wrong, you don't just lose that visit: they also leave a negative review.

Business description

You have up to 750 characters to describe your salon. Use them well:

  • Mention the main services you offer.
  • Include the neighborhood or area where you're located.
  • Talk about your experience or what sets you apart.
  • Naturally add local keywords (e.g. "beauty salon in Medellín", "cut and color in El Poblado").

Example of an effective description:

"Beauty salon in Chapinero, Bogotá, specializing in hair treatments, coloring and manicures. More than 8 years of experience. We work by appointment Monday to Saturday. Book online or message us on WhatsApp."

Step 3: Photos that turn views into appointments

Photos are the most important differentiator on your Google profile. Businesses with photos receive 42% more direction requests and 35% more clicks than those without (Think with Google / Google Business Help Center), according to Google's data.

Which photos to upload

Cover photo: the main image on your profile. Use a well-lit photo of the salon's interior that reflects the real atmosphere.

Profile photo: your business logo or a professional photo of the team.

Salon interior: show the real space: workstations, décor, cleanliness and organization. Clients want to know what environment they'll be in.

Work you've done (before/after): these are the photos with the biggest impact on conversion. A before/after coloring, a great cut, perfect brows: these are the photos that turn someone browsing into someone booking.

Your team: team photos build trust and humanize the business.

Storefront: helps clients find you physically.

Technical recommendations

  • At least 10 photos when you launch your profile.
  • Add new photos at least once a month (Google values recent activity).
  • Minimum resolution: 720 x 720 pixels. Landscape preferred.
  • Good natural or artificial lighting; avoid dark or blurry photos.
  • Don't use stock photos. Google and users prefer real images of the business.
💡

Videos also work very well on Google Business Profile. A 30-second video showing the salon's interior or a finished result can generate far more engagement than a static photo.

Step 4: Reviews, the most powerful Google Business factor

Google reviews are the number one factor in whether a new client chooses your salon or a competitor's. A business with 4.8 stars and 150 reviews almost always beats one with 4.2 and 20 reviews.

How to get more reviews (ethically)

The most important rule: never buy fake reviews. Google detects fraud patterns and can remove your profile entirely. The right path is simpler than it looks:

1. Ask at the right moment: the best time to ask for a review is right when the client finishes the service and is happy. A simple "Would you mind leaving us a Google review? It really helps" works with many clients.

2. Share the direct link: instead of telling the client to search for your business on Google, share the direct link to leave a review. You can generate it from your Google Business dashboard. Shorten it with Bit.ly to share it on WhatsApp.

3. Add the link to your post-service flow: if you use WhatsApp Business, send a follow-up message a few days after the appointment inviting the client to share their experience.

4. Reply to every review: positive and negative. Google values businesses that are active on the platform, and clients read how you respond to critical comments.

How to respond to negative reviews

A negative review handled well can be more powerful than a positive one. The key:

  • Reply within 24–48 hours.
  • Thank the client for their time, even if the review is unfair.
  • Acknowledge the problem without making excuses.
  • Offer a concrete solution (e.g. "we'd like to invite you for a free visit to fix it").
  • Keep a professional tone at all times.

Potential clients read these replies and judge how mature the business is.

Step 5: Google posts keep your profile alive

Google posts are updates that appear directly on your Google profile, similar to social media posts. They're visible when someone looks up your business.

Use them to:

  • Announce promotions or special discounts.
  • Communicate schedule changes or holidays.
  • Show new services.
  • Share before/afters or team news.

Posting once a week shows the business is active, which Google rewards with better rankings.

Step 6: Enable online booking from your profile

One of the most powerful upgrades you can make to your profile is letting clients book directly from it.

When a client finds your salon on Google Maps and can book right then and there, conversion multiplies. Instead of looking up your number, messaging you on WhatsApp and waiting for a reply, the client books with no middleman.

To do this, add your booking page link as the appointment link in the bookings section of your Google Business Profile (and as your website too, if you don't have another one). If you use AgenditApp, that link is your booking page (for example, your-business.agenditapp.com), where the client chooses a service, professional and time in under 2 minutes.

The full flow looks like this:

  1. A client searches "beauty salon Medellín" on Google.
  2. Your salon appears among the top results with 4.8 stars.
  3. They click your booking link straight from your Google Maps profile.
  4. They choose the service, day and available time.
  5. They get an instant WhatsApp confirmation from your business's number.

No friction, no waiting for a reply, no lost appointments because nobody answered in time.

Step 7: Questions and answers

The questions and answers section lets you answer frequent questions directly on your profile. It works like this:

  • Any user can ask a question on your profile.
  • You (as the owner) can answer.
  • You can also create the most useful questions and answers yourself.

Proactively create Q&As for the questions you get most:

  • "Do I need an appointment?" → "Yes, we work by appointment. You can book online from our website or message us on WhatsApp."
  • "How much is a cut and blow-dry?" → "The price depends on hair length and type of service. Check our service catalog on the profile or message us."
  • "Do you have parking?" → a concrete answer.
  • "Do you take walk-ins?" → your business's policy.

Metrics to track

Google Business Profile gives you basic statistics on how users interact with your profile:

MetricWhat it measuresPositive sign
Direct searchesPeople who searched your exact nameGrows with local brand awareness
Discovery searchesPeople who found you by searching "beauty salon"↑ = your local SEO is improving
Profile viewsTimes your full profile was opened100+ views/month is a good starting threshold
Website clicksVisits to your site or booking link from Google>5% of profile views
CallsCalls made directly from GoogleEvery call = a warm lead
Direction requestsPeople who asked for directions to your salonHigh intent to visit

Check these metrics once a month. An increase in "discovery searches" means your local ranking is improving.

Google Business + WhatsApp + scheduling: the winning trio

For a beauty salon in Colombia in 2026, the most effective local strategy combines three tools:

Google Business Profile: makes you visible when clients are actively searching. It's the entry point.

WhatsApp Business: the channel where clients feel comfortable communicating. Set it up properly to look professional from the first message.

Online scheduling system (AgenditApp): turns interest into concrete bookings, manages availability automatically and sends reminders that reduce no-shows.

These three systems are the digital foundation for any salon that wants to grow in the coming years. And all of them are affordable for small and mid-sized businesses in Colombia.
